Complete 4 Volumes. Les Liaisons dangereuses (The Dangerous Liaisons) is a French epistolary novel by Pierre Choderlos de Laclos, first published in four volumes in 1782. It is the story of the Marquise de Merteuil and the Vicomte de Valmont, two rivals (and ex-lovers) who use seduction as a weapon to humiliate and degrade others, all the while enjoying their cruel games and boasting about their manipulative talents. It has been claimed to depict the decadence of the French aristocracy shortly before the French Revolution, thereby exposing the perversions of the so-called Ancien Régime. As an epistolary novel, the book is composed entirely of letters written by the various characters to each other. In particular, the letters between Valmont and the Marquise drive the plot, with those of their victims and other characters serving as contrasting figures to give the story its depth.

1741년 프랑스의 아미앵에서 태어났다. 1760년 신흥 귀족 집안의 아들로서 군인의 길을 걷기로 하고, 라페르 왕립포병학교에 입학한다. 이후 스트라스부르, 그르노블, 브장송 등 포병대에 근무하면서 틈틈이 희곡 작품을 쓰기 시작하여, 1770년에 『마르고에게 보내는 편지EPITRE A MARGOT』를, 1773년에 『추억, 에글레에게 보내는 편지LES SOUVENIRS, EPITRE A EGLEE』를 발표한다. 1777년 리코보니 부인(MARIE-JEANNE RICCOBONI)의 소설을 각색한 오페라 코미크「에르네스틴ERNESTINE」 발표하나, 파리의 이탈리아 극장 무대에서 단 한 번 공연한 후 막을 내린다. 1782년에 5년에 걸친 집필 끝에 『위험한 관계LES LIAISONS DANGEREUSES』를 출간하고, 이것이 사흘 만에 초판 2천 부가 모두 판매되는 기록을 세운다. 1783년 사회개혁을 통해 여성을 노예 상태에서 벗어나게 해야 한다는 논문「여성의 교육에 대하여DE L'EDUCATION DES FEMMES」를 쓰기도 했던 라클로는 1788년 군대생활을 청산하고 왕가의 일원이면서 혁명정신을 지지하던 오를레앙 공의 비서관이 되어 자코뱅파 일원으로 공화정 설립에 적극 참여한다. 그러나 1793년 로베스피에르가 집권하면서 투옥되었다가 1800년 같은 포병장교 출신인 나폴레옹이 정권을 장악하면서 다시 군에 복귀한다. 3년 뒤 이탈리아의 타란토에서 병으로 사망한다.

You see, my dear friend, I keep my word, and that dress does not totally take up all my time; I shall ever have some left for you. In this single day I have seen more finery of attire, than in the four years we have spent together; and I believe the haughty Tanville will be more mortified at my first visit, when I shall certainly desire to see her, than she used to be every time she came to see us in fiochi. Mamma advises with me in every thing; she behaves to me no longer as a boarder in a convent. I have a chamber-maid to myself; a chamber and a closet of my own, and a very pretty scrutoire, of which I keep the key, and where I can lock up every thing. My Mamma has told me, I must be with her every morning at her levee; that it would be sufficient to have my head dressed by dinner, because we should always be alone, and that then she would each day tell me what time I should come to her apartment in the evening. The remainder of my time is at my own disposal; I have my harpsichord, my drawings, and books, just as in the convent, only that the mother abbess is not here to scold. And I may always be idle, if I please: but as I have not my dear Sophy to chat and laugh with, I am as well pleased with some occupation. It is not yet five, and I am not to go to Mamma till seven: what a deal of time, if I had any thing to tell you! but nothing has been yet mentioned to me of any consequence: and if it were not for the preparation I see making, and the number of women employed for me, I should be apt to think they have no notion of my nuptials, and that it was one of old Josephine's tales. Yet Mamma having so often told me, that a young lady should remain in a convent, until she was on the point of marriage, and having now brought me home, I am apt to think Josephine right.
A coach has just stopped at our door, and Mamma has sent for me. If it should be my intended!—I am not dressed, and am all in agitation; my heart flutters. I asked my maid, if she knew who was with my Mamma? "Why," says she, laughing, "it is Mr. C——." I really believe it is he. I will certainly return and write you the whole; however, that's his name.
